Children
Classes
We are a small school so all our classes have two age groups in them. This is very common in Devon schools with some schools being very small with only two or three classes. In September 2009 we will have the following classes:
- Reception / Year 1 – Elm Class
- Year 1/2 – Oak Class
- Year 2/3 – Maple Class
- Year 4 / Year 5 - Sycamore
- Year 5/ Year 6 - Beech
Due to the nature of having mixed age classes it is often necessary to change the composition of classes each year, for example when year 6 pupils leave at the end of the year they release 20 places. These places are filled by the new year 6 children along with about 8-10 year 5 children. This has a ripple effect across the school with groups of children changing classes.
The children who attend the Speech and Language Centre are fully included in the Mainstream classes for Reception to Year 3 pupils. They receive support in the classroom and in withdrawal groups from the co-ordinator of the centre, speech therapist and teaching assistants. |

St Matthew’s Community Pre-school
We are very fortunate to have St Matthew’s Community Pre-school in the lower building, next to the Reception / Year 1 Class. The pre-school is very well run by the play leader, who is a qualified teacher and two assistants. The pre-school runs from 9.15am to 3.15pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 9.15am to 11.45am Wednesday and Friday with lunch club available every day between 11.45am and 12.45pm. It is for children from the age of three to nearly five. Parents can use nursery vouchers and / or pay for sessions.
The pre-school is run separately from the school, and attendance does not affect entry into Newtown school. There are many opportunities for contact between pre-school and the Reception / Year 1 Class. Further information can be obtained from the play leader in the classroom each morning, or contact the administrator Nicky Jeffrey on 01392 681571.
