Growing Readers

Once children have passed the Y1 phonics screen and moved into phase 6, they begin reading higher book band levels: turquoise, purple, gold, white and then lime. These books are available online via Bug Club and are set by your child's teacher. They also bring a book home from school and it is very important they have support when reading, with questions about what words mean and what is happening, to help them understand the text.

Once children are confident reading lime books, they become a free reader and are guided to choose longer chapter books. It is still important they are supported to read and understand a range of text types, reading texts that have some challenge, but that they understand.
