Kestrels
Welcome Everyone to the Kestrel Class!
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are so excited to be working alongside both Year 4 and 5 this year in the Kestrel class. Miss Pells will be teaching Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays, while Mrs Bailey will teach the class on a Thursday. Mrs Sinclair is also support across both the Year 4/5 classes.
Learning Journey:
This half term, the Kestrels will be looking at Ancient Egyptians. We will become historians to evaluate who were the most important group in Egyptian Civilization? The children are already so excited for this topic and are brimming with knowledge already which is superb!
We will be investigating farmers and the role of the River Nile. How scribes changed the way we can communicate, including looking at the Rosetta stone. We will then move onto mummification, re-enacting out what priests would have done. We will then finish off by looking at Pharaohs and God and Goddesses.
Once we have finished this learning journey, we will then be using our knowledge of Ancient Egyptians to create our own Egyptian self-portraits. We will even be writing our own names in hieroglyphics.
Maths:
For the rest of the half term, in maths we will be looking at multiplication and division as well as length, perimeter and area. We also use snappy maths as a way to build on our times table and division knowledge to boost the children’s confidence. Timetable Rock Stars is up and running again for your child to practise their timetables at home.
Reading:
We always encourage for your child to read a minimum of 5 times during the week, either on their own or with family member. Spending just 5 – 10 minutes a day of reading will benefit your child massively and will help unlock all areas of the curriculum, ensuring they have the best chance to succeed in school.
Home Learning:
Home learning will be set weekly. This will consist learning and practicing the 10 spellings we are focusing on in class, ready for a spellings test the following Monday. There will also be maths home learning, which will be linked to the topic area we are focusing on.
PE:
This half term, we will have PE on a Friday morning. Please can you ensure that you child comes into school in their uniform and brings there PE to school to get changed. PE kits are kept in the classroom. We kindly remind you to ensure that all PE kit remains in line with our school’s uniform policy. Please also provide your Kestrel with an optional warm tracksuit to wear over their clothes, as our PE sessions will continue when the weather becomes colder.
Communication:
This year, we will continue to communicate with parents and carers via Class Dojo. On here, we will post regular updates and pictures of the children learning, as well as other important information that you need to know about. You also have the option to contact us directly via the private messaging tool, but please note that we will likely only respond during school hours. If you do want to speak in person about any worries or concerns, Miss Pells is more than happy to do so.
Best wishes,
Miss Pells, Mrs Sinclair and Mrs Bailey.
